Have you ever wanted to explore the wreckage of the Titanic? How about sunken ships in general? Well it looks like some time in the near future all people will be able to see first hand the wreckage of a very famous ship. The sister ship of the Titanic the HMHS Britannic which went down only 4 years after it’s predecessor during the first world war.
The Britannic lies at the bottom of the Aegean Sea off the Greek Isle of Kea where it sank on November 21, 1916. At the time the ship was actually being used as a floating hospital ship for the British Navy during the first world war. The history behind the Britannic and it’s use is a point of contention for some historians with the most widely accepted reason for it’s sinking was an underwater mine laid by a German U-Boat. Other popular conspiracy theories claim a torpedo or even that the ship was carrying explosives and military men for transport using the “hospital ship” as cover.
So there is a lot of great history behind the sinking of the Britannic to make it a great tourist attraction but what will really make this a great place to see is the location that the Britannic sank. Unlike the location of the Titanic deep in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic the Britannic rests in the warm waters off the Greek Isles in the Aegean Sea. The warmth of the Aegean Sea has managed to preserve the Britannic where as the brutal conditions of the North Atlantic is decaying the Titanic at a much more rapid pace. The warmer conditions and the proximity of the Britannic to the Greek Isles also makes it a great location for a tourist attraction with easier access.
The owner of the Britannic wreckage Simon Mills acquired the ownership of the Britannic wreck from the UK government in 1996. Luckily for all of us ship wreck exploring wanna bee’s Mr. Mills is a marine historian and his intention is to not only preserve but give viewing access to the general public. The Britannic lies at a manageable 400ft below the surface and Mr. Mills hopes to have 3 to 4 person subs sometime next year giving viewing tours of the final resting place of the HMHS Britannic. So start planning an extra stop the next time you travel to the Greek islands.
Tribute to HMHS Britannic, Enjoy!
